Adopting a Shelter Dog

October 1, 2020

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! If you’re ready to bring a new four-legged companion into your household, please consider adopting a shelter pup. This is a great way to find Fido! A Glen Ellyn, IL veterinarian offers some tips on this below.

Choose Wisely

Choosing a pup is a big decision, and one that will have a huge impact on your life for years to come. In some cases, people only have to glance at a pooch to know they’ve found their canine buddy. It isn’t always that easy, though, especially when you’re faced with several adorable furry faces. Consider Fido’s age, size, breed, and personality, and find out what you can about his history. It’s important to pick a dog that suits your life and household.

Don’t Overlook Less-Adoptable Pets

There are many sweet pets languishing in shelters, just because they aren’t quite perfect. These guys sometimes make the best pups, as they’re so grateful to finally get love and attention. Don’t automatically pass by that sweet senior dog or the one that can’t hear. They’re just as full of love and tail wags as any other pooch!

Be Prepared

Once you’ve chosen your canine pal, you’ll need to hit the pet store. Fido will need all the requisite doggy necessities, such as food, toys, treats, bedding, dishes, a leash and collar, and a tie-out line. You’ll also want to do some petproofing, to make sure your place is safe. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous, such as toxic plants, chemicals, and small or sharp objects.

Make The Commitment

When you adopt Fido, you’re promising to care for him for the rest of his days. Make sure that you’re ready, willing, and able to make that commitment! If that seems overwhelming, choose a pet with a shorter lifespan.

Have Fun

Take lots of pictures of your furry friend’s ‘Gotcha’ day. It’s adorable seeing how happy dogs get when they realize they’ve been adopted! That said, Fido may need to recuperate from the stress of being in a shelter. He may sleep a lot at first, and he may need time to adjust. With time, love, and great care, you’ll be getting tail wags and belly rub requests in no time!
