Caring for a Deaf Dog

Deaf Dog Awareness Week is September 20th to the 26st! Any pooch can develop hearing problems due to trauma, infection, injury, or even just old age. However, congenital deafness is quite prevalent in pale pups, particularly Dalmations, white Boxers and Bull Terriers, and English Setters. Fido is very resilient, and can do just fine if one or both of his cute ears don’t work right. A Glen Ellyn, IL vet discusses caring for deaf dogs below.

Training

Dogs are extremely resilient, and can learn to respond to hand signals, just as they would voice commands. You may also be able to teach Fido to come when you wave a flashlight. This can come in very handy after dark!

Walking Safety

Just like any other dog, Fido will still need regular walks. If you take your canine buddy along the side of a road, walk towards oncoming traffic, and keep him to the outside. Remember that Fido won’t be able to hear things like horns or brakes squealing. Be extra vigilant, especially at night!

No Sneak Attacks

Pooches that can’t hear well tend to share one common pet peeve: they hate it when people sneak up on them. Stamp your foot before approaching Fido, and make sure he knows you’re there. 

Wakeup Calls

Many deaf dogs hate being awakened suddenly. Try holding a treat beneath Fido’s nose. That’s a pretty pleasant way to wake up! 

Safe Space

Do you have a yard for Fido to run and play in? Your pooch will love having a safe spot to just enjoy being a dog. Make sure your fencing is secure. 

Bells

Consider putting a bell on Fido’s collar. This will help you track his whereabouts. 

Hearing

Sometimes, pets with hearing issues can still hear very high or low notes, like piano keys or dog whistles. Try it and see! 

Sign

It may also be helpful to put a sign on Fido’s collar that says he can’t hear. This should definitely be noted on his ID tags. 

Bonding

Just like any other dogs, pups that can’t hear well really just want to spend time with their humans. Pay lots of attention to your furry buddy! Fido will still melt your heart with his cute antics and tail wags!
